Throughout the State of Florida, numerous school boards have been attempting to standardize the clothing that students wear. The school superintendents who are in favor of uniforms will argue that the children who wear them will experience many benefits. I disagree with this position. I feel that the use of uniforms will strip identity, stifle creativity, and unnecessarily burden the families that cannot afford them. The use of uniforms has already been implemented in several long-standing social environments. The penal system uses uniforms to brand those persons who are incarcerated. Likewise, the military also uses them to separate and remove the individualism inside of the soldier. In both cases, individual identity is stripped away and the subject is forced to conform to the same outward appearance as every other subject. Another problem that will surface due to the implementation of school uniforms is the suppression of the individual's creativity and expression. Many students' express who they are through the way they dress. If a teenager wants to show the rest of the world that he loves Jesus, then he or she might wear a T-shirt that states a positive view on the subject. Similarly, a student might want to wear green colored clothing to show his or her support for St. Patrick's day. School uniforms would end both of those examples listed within this paragraph and many, many more. The last issue that needs to be addressed is the unnecessary burden that will be placed upon those families of limited resources. Many low-income families do not have the money available to furnish uniforms to their children. They can barely make ends meet with the help of charities and social programs. In Polk County, Florida, the school board is trying to pass legislation that a child cannot attend school unless they have on the proper uniform. An education is supposed to be available to all children, not just the ones whose parents can afford to buy the government ordered att ire. I have listed several reasons why the use of school uniforms should not be implemented in America's public education system. Not only will it melt the individual into the mass, but it will also hinder those that are destitute. If the school boards desire to make the use of uniforms mandatory, then they need to issue all of the required equipment, just like the military and the prison systems do. Having a school full of students wearing the same clothes and hairstyles helps build an integration within the class. Students that wear many different styles of clothes all come together wearing similar pants, shirts, ties, and shoes. Through a dress code restriction, everyone is helped to be made more comfortable by wearing similar clothes, otherwise, people may feel alienated with less trendy or "cool" clothes. Hairstyles help ease this integration as well by giving each person similar styles making everyone feel more at ease. The overall integration helps the students realize that although people may look similar, the idea that everyone exhibits will be greatly different. These different ideas are present in everyone, and the dress code and hair restrictions help illustrate that just because someone looks the same, they do not think the same. When the students get jobs or find careers in their future, it will be helpful to know that even though all their co-wor s seem similar, th ey are in actuality very different. This approach to future jobs and careers will give the students an advantage in being open minded with people school uniforms Public school systems across the country are now requiring students to wear uniforms. Over the years, this phrase has been nothing more than words.  America once prided itself on being the melting pot uniting many people, races, religions, and cultures. We were supposed to bind together to form a unified nation; however the concept of the melting pot is nothing more than a forgotten idea.  Retired U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski summed up her thoughts of the melting pot when she said, America is not a melting pot. It is a sizzling cauldron (Mikulski). Racism is still alive and breeding its infestations on the American people. America is supposed to be the land of opportunity, the country that promises freedom of choices. As stated in the National Anthem, America is the land of the free and the home of the brave. Americ a is the country where dreams can come true. If America has emerged as a single people and nation, why does racism still exist in the twentieth century? In history, racism has always been an issue around the world and still is a big issue today. The term racism was created by the Communist Party as propaganda as they took over Russia and the surround European nations. According the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the meaning of racism is a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. What is white, Italian, starts with a ‘M’, and is hated all over? No, it’s not mozzarella cheese it is Niccolo Machiavelli. Machiavelli was a Florentine chancellor and a well known philosopher. He is notoriously known for being amoral and his entire collection of works was on the Papal Index (Machiavelli’s The Prince). Though he lived during the 1400’s his works are still being read, analyzed, scrutinized, and, in the case of modern politicians, used as a blueprint in how to run a nation. Niccolo Machiavelli was born on May 3, 1469 to Bernardo di Niccolo and Bartolomea Nelli (Machiavelli Pg. 145). The Machiavelli name, at one time, came from the Tuscan nobility, though by the time of Niccolo’s birth the only thing left was a little bit of country property and some houses in Florence (Machiavelli and Renaissance Italy pg.28). Niccolo’s father, despite being a lawyer, was a tad less successful than the other branch of Machiavelli’s and he used everything he earned as a lawyer to care for his four children. Machiavelli shared a household with his two sisters, Primavera and Margherita and his brother Totto (pg 28.). Machiavelli’s mother was known for being a religious poet, ironic given her son’s view on religion. In 1498, Niocolo was elected to office as Second Chancellor (pg. 32) His job description was simply to make sure the policy decisions of others were put into effect. In 1502 Machiavelli was wed to his wife, Marietta di Ludovic o Corsini, many sources state that she was probably a very patient person and a beneficent influence on Machiavelli’s life (Machiavelli pg. 149). Machiavelli had six children: Bernardo, Baccia, Ludovico, Piero, Guido and an unnamed daughter. In 1503 he arrived in Rome and took notes on a Papal elect... ... standards. This work also previews Machiavelli’s utter disgust with mankind and he is quoted in saying â€Å"If men were good, then one should be good in return, ‘but because men are wretched creatures, who would not keep their word to you, you need not keep your word to them.’ (Pg 152) Machiavelli also states that â€Å"men will always be false to you unless they are compelled by necessity to be true.† (Pg. 152) One can see where he draws up his conclusion that acting immoral to gain a prince hood is acceptable. To Machiavelli, he is just doing to one, that one would do to him. It is interesting to see the connections between this text written in the 1500’s to modern day politicians now. Many people could agree that The Prince is a handbook to such figures as Stalin or Hitler but many more could see the relation between Machiavelli’s word and George W. Bush’s actions.

The metaphor is a widely used figure of speech both in literature and in everyday world. People use metaphors when talking about self, career, life history, feelings and beliefs. Some of the metaphors have gain the value of aphorism due to their large usage and cultural pervasiveness. People often compare their life to a journey or to a step-by-step process that may be represented by a ladder; you may climb or you may fall, and then re-engage in the process of climbing, striving to reach the top. Many people use the ladder metaphor when they talk about their careers. Such metaphor is rather spatial, but may also be assimilated to a journey. This metaphor I was also taught and in my opinion it is widely spread in many cultures. When referring to the ladder as a metaphor of life or career the meaning of progress, of taking small steps and of being aware of the risk of falling are involved. However, it conveys the subtleties also found in the semantic field of career or life, as they both may encompass progress, regress or stagnation. Nevertheless, metaphors seem to value the positive, since viewing career metaphorically as a ladder suggests mainly progress and taking safe steps forward. The journey metaphor has been also applied to relationships; some people say that â€Å"my relationship is a journey†, alluding in fact to the ups and downs, unusual or interesting turns of events. Another metaphor related to progress in many areas of life is that of growing. People make reference to spiritual growth, emotional or professional growth. Such metaphor with a horticultural origin emphasizes the same meaning of development and progress, of enrichment. Usually people use the metaphor in contexts of life experiences, referring to the growth certain experiences bring about. Another metaphor is that of imprisonment. I have heard it most often used in relation to expressing feelings – such as â€Å"I feel imprisoned† (in a relationship, a profession etc.). The most frequent meaning I am aware of for such a metaphor is that of lack of communication or/and emotional exhaustion. The metaphors I mentioned above may be easily identify in interviews. For instance the metaphors related to career may be more often heard in recruiting processes or in professional settings. But they are not limited to such contexts, of course. They may prove useful in opening interviews or in making the rapport to the interviewee, depending on the type and setting of the interview. With such purpose the ladder metaphor may be used in an introduction in which the value of professional itinerary is described (important in opening an interview), and to make appeal to the needs of the individual related to constructing a career (in making the rapport). The interviewer could make use of this metaphor when explaining why career is important and how individuals relate to it. The metaphor of imprisonment may be more frequent in clinical settings or in clinical interviews. It is very important in such contexts to clarify the meaning the person assigns to the concept. Rhodes and Jakes (2004) put forth a valuable example of how metaphor research may be used in clinical setting by illustrating the role of metaphor and metonymy in maintaining delusions for some of the patients. However, these meanings assigned to metaphors may vary across families or cultures. For instance a family or culture in which the masculine values are predominant may use the metaphor of ladder or that of journey in professional context or when talking about career. The families or cultures that guide themselves after more feminine values use such metaphors referring to relationships and life events. In metaphor use there are certain universal aspects but also a great variability. For instance, the metaphorical expression â€Å"to burn one's fingers† implying that someone was deceived by something, is referred to in Russian in the form â€Å"to burn oneself†, or in Finnish â€Å"to burn one's fingers on something†, but implies the same meaning in all cases. The metaphor â€Å"something is hard to swallow† having food as an origin and making reference to problems, has a different expression in Czech – â€Å"something is hard to digest† and Japanese – â€Å"something is hard to chew† (Callies and Zimmermann, edts. 2002) It is very important to interpret the metaphorical language correctly especially when dealing with investigative contexts (social, clinical, professional etc.). In different types of interviews metaphors are important as they help establish the opening of the interview and rapport. Moreover, identifying the metaphors and the correct interpretation is important to determine true communicative intentions during the other stages of the interview. In Everyday Use, Alice Walker explores the importance of home to a family of three women in Georgia. This story is told from the eyes of Mama, Dee and Maggie's mother. Walker uses Mama to characterize her daughters and herself in an unbiased light that only a mother could love or know. Mam is a large, big boned woman wit rough, man working hands, who can kill and clean a hog as mersilessly as a man(1). Mama, a round cahracter, lives a life that contradicts Dee's ideas. Mama contributes it mostly to her and Maggie's lack of academis intelligence. She usually allows Dee to receive what she wants because of this difference. By the end of this short story, Mama puts her foot down. Mama describes Maggied, a dynamic character, with a tone of pity. She knows she is not bright. Like good looks and money, quickness passed her buy(3). Maaggies is accustomed to being pushed aside. Maggie is characterized in this story by her actions rather than her words. Her sullen attitude is seen in her mother's descripion of her simply walking. Have you ever seen a lame animal, perhaps a dog, run over soem careless person, sidle up to someone who is ingorant enough to be kind to them?(2). Dee seems to be the cause of her angst. Near the conclusion, Maggie's sullen attitude is ahnged when her mother refuses to allow her to be pushed aside by Dee. Maggie smiled. . . But a real smile not scared(7). Dee felt she was different from the rest of her family. She was the olly one to attend college. She favors what was popularized by the world outside of her home. Dee wanted nice things. . . at sixteen she had a style of her own(2). Her mother offered her a qulit when she went away for college. She told me they were old fashioned, out of style(6). She is a static character. She returns home unahnged, not willing to understand another point of view, but wanting her family to change and bend to her ideas even after the short story concludes. Symbolism, the association of a meaning or theme to an item, is used in this novel to give ther reader a greater understanding of each characters inner thoughts.
